McLean Returns To The Penguins

The Trenton Sting were pleased to learn that former Captain Kurtis McLean has been called up to the American Hockey League once again.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins recalled McLean; who plays centre; from the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL on November 29th. McLean, 26, is tied for fifth in the ECHL in both scoring (24 points) and goals (11) through 16 games this season.

The native of Kirkland Lake, ON, split last season between Wheeling and Wilkes-Barre / Scranton. He recorded 56 points and a team-leading 31 goals in 41 games with the Nailers, and added 15 points (4+11) in 32 games with the Penguins. McLean tied the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton record for points in a game with five (1+4) on January 18 against the Syracuse Crunch.

It only took McLean 29 minutes, 23 seconds to pick up his first AHL goal of the season. Last season, McLean had two goals and six points versus the Crunch and was a plus 6. “I’ve had some luck against them,” McLean said of the Crunch. “I was just trying to make the most of my opportunity. Obviously it’s enjoyable to be back and I want to contribute as much as possible.”

As of today, McLean has 2 goals and 2 assists in five games since rejoining the club.
Keep up the great work Kurtis, we'll be cheering for you as always.

Keep working hard Kurtis. You make us all proud.

Kurtis is a great hockey player and he's exactly the type of player this team needs right now. I know they're hard to come by but he had the qualities of a true leader on and off the ice.

He had great skills, worked hard every game and every practice and demanded the same from his teammates. He always put the team first and even with all the success he had on the ice, he never had an ego and certainly never made his fellow team members feel like they weren't as good as him.

We knew when we hit the ice Kurtis was going to lead by example and we worked as hard as we could to play as hard as he did. He took pride in wearing the Sting uniform and when he and the rest of our team won the East Championship it wasn't because we had the talent, because we certainly didn't. We won because we wanted it more and played with heart. We worked the hardest we could every shift and we wanted to win for the coach.

We didn't all like Alex because he was tough on us but looking back after we won, we were glad he pushed us because it was worth it in the end.

Coach took us from being a group of young men to being a team and eventually we became a family and we would do anything to protect each other and we'd do anything to help each other succeed, even if it meant sitting on the bench and cheering.

Those are some of the best times I've ever had with that team, from the players, to the coaches and the management. It was a total team and family effort.

I think this current team needs to be willing to go that extra distance and give that extra effort if they want to achieve what we did.

Good Luck to the Sting and wear that Jersey with pride like all of us who went before you.
